Oops, Out Of State

Now boys and girls, repeat after [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom:

I WILL ALWAYS INSPECT CHECKS BEFORE DEPOSITING TO SEE WHETHER THEY'RE LOCAL, SO I CAN PLAN ACCORDINGLY IF THEY'RE NOT.

In case you haven't guessed, I didn't, and it wasn't. On Tuesday I deposited the $600 freelance writing check, never stopping to wonder if the check might not be local, then went on a merry bill-paying spree, naturally forgetting to ask [livejournal.com profile] vanguardcdk if he was able to pay me his half this week or if I should wait and pay bills next week. Not an issue, I thought, my freelance check will clear Thursday and all will be fine. But when it hadn't cleared by this morning, I called my bank. Non-local check. It won't clear until next Tuesday. Someone with a camcorder should come over and tape me and CDK fighting over the last bite of catfood.

Well, I get to relive being 22 again, and will take my sand bucket of change to the CoinStar tonight. Luckily I don't have any real plans this weekend except for visiting with [livejournal.com profile] beowabbit on Sunday, so the only thing I need to cancel out on is goth dancing at TT's tonight (sorry, [livejournal.com profile] majes! Although come to think of it, I can't remember if I RSVP'd or not.). Feel free to drag me or CDK out for free activities. Or, since I'm revisiting my starving artist years for a few days, maybe I should make some art (literary art). You'll see it if I do.

Check Your Checks!

MIT Federal Credit Union. Like time-traveling to the 1980s for banking. I really need to wean myself out of there. I've stayed because they're pleasant and homey. But I can get that quality from institutions other than the one(s) I bank with.

Suggested new financial homes welcome.

I'd suggest Wainwright. I've been with them for 3 years now. No fees, small min. balances or none, free online bill pay, convenient local office...

I can wholeheartedly recommend Wainwright Bank (i.e. The Happy Rainbow Bank). I've been with them for about 6 years, and I've been very happy with the service/fees/etc.

Hmm, 2 votes for The Happy Rainbow Bank. Mmmm, granola. I see free swag in the website photo. Think I'll drop by the Davis location to talk...

i do <3 MITFCU. but yeah, they've got some issues. and some slowness. and a couple of really bitchy people. but anyway, i stay with them because they've got really nice looking mortgage rates, if i ever decide to buy property.

and hey, if you help me move, i'll feed you. ;)

seriously, though. that is teh suxx0r.

One problem is that they take "bankers hours" to whole new level of sucky. The other is that MIT holidays tend to be MITFCU holidays, too, and MIT is generous with holidays. And I don't like having to go to campus every time I need to make a deposit, since I no longer work there and it's inconvenient.

yeah, that's a pain. seeing as i work just down the street, it's pretty nice.
