We Got Cracked
Last night, I and pretty much everyone I know enjoyed the burlesque/ballet romp that is The Slutcracker at the Somerville Theater.
beowabbit and I got tickets weeks ago, and I didn't know what to expect. My brain had filled in the blank with some kind of nakedy variety show on a holiday theme. It wasn't that; it was the entire Nutcracker ballet done in burlesque style with the original score, and it was hilarious, sexy and just plain old joyful.
I'd never seen a burlesque show before, and in my mind I guess I'd never differentiated burlesque from stripper performance (which I have seen). What I hadn't groked is that comedy is the point of burlesque, and in many ways it melds sexy dance with clowning. This show was gigglingly risque and laugh-out-loud funny. It even was heart-warming, in its wiggly way. The Somerville Theatre was packed to the rafters, and I can't imagine that anyone there didn't have a great time. It just made me feel good, and even sexy (I offset my bad hair day with Christmas hair ribbons and a Christmas bulb necklace). Props to the two hottie Firsties on my f'list who helped dazzle the audience!
If you have tickets, good on you! I believe the rest of the run is sold out, which doesn't surprise me. This is as happy a holiday romp as you'll find anywhere. :-)

YES!
there is something inherently funny about people taking their clothes off, that, and you feel like much less of a creepy lurker if you're laughing when you're leering. there is something about the stripper being clever and in on the joke that makes it sexy and fun for both the performer and the audience.
i'm so glad your first burlesque experience was a good one!
