New York -- I Always Miss Her When I Leave
I got home Sunday evening from another fun weekend in New York, accompanied by the only travel companion I haven't savagely killed on an away-trip, the rockin'
espressojim.
We got to town later than expected on the Fung Wah, due to thick traffic originating from God know's what. We happened to be on the same bus with Peter Gilbert, who added fun to the long bus ride conversation.
We wanted to hit the Guggenheim because of it's later closing on Fridays, and along with Peter we made a fast B-line up there to wander up the spiral for the last hour and a half.
Hungry for dumplings, we shot back down to Chinatown, where Jim knew of a place that specialized in soup dumplings (the dumplings with the soup on the inside). They were better than the only other soup dumplings I've had, and along with two other dishes made a tasty first meal of the weekend.
We weren't far at all from our hotel. I'd like to officially recommend (with a few small disclaimers and caveats) the Sohotel-Pioneer on Broome Street as one of best lodging bargain finds I've come across in New York. It's older than God and as bare-bones spare as a hostel in its amenities and decor, but if you want a room with private bath and air conditioning for $89 a night right smack between several of Manhattan's funkiest and coolest neighborhoods, this is your place.
The next morning it was gelato for breakfast -- Il Laboratorio Del Gelato. Next time you're in New York, don't miss it! From there we headed up to Madison Square Park, for the 3rd Annual Big Apple Barbeque Block Party. I posted a full event report in the
food_porn community; easier to just read it there, since there was a lot to tell.
Later that night, a run out to Brooklyn to see BitShifter play at a small gallery, then back into Manhattan for a show at The Knitting Factory. I really enjoyed the first band we saw, Mobius. The headlining band, Winter Pagent, wasn't nearly as compelling nor as genuine, but I was glad to be checking out the Knitting Factory after hearing about it for so many years.
Sunday morning we revisited Les Halles for brunch. We got an outdoor table, but the food far outdid the service this time and we had to skip dessert in order to make the bus we wanted. Still, I like the place for it's association with my favorite bad boy celeb chef, Tony B. And somebody walked by wearing a SoundBites t-shirt. :-)
Like every trip I make to New York, it once again reinforced how much I would one day love to live there, when the time and finances are right. Neither are in place now... but that day will come.
