The Hunt Will Continue

High Beam and Flash came up empty-handed last night in our search for dresses to wear to the wedding. Filene's basement was not the stockpile of beautiful party gowns it had been when we went last month, which happened to be on the eve of the annual Bridezilla Extravaganza. This time, the dresses were all either frumpy atrocities or cheap shmatteh. Macy's and H&M yielded nothing, either. If this keeps up, we might have to show up to D & K's wedding naked in tiaras. (which we saw plenty of, ironically).

We didn't go home without consolation prizes, though. We stopped in briefly at a Mary Kay product sampling event across from my workplace, and left with freebie bags of makeup and skin care samples and gooey compliments from the Mary Kay reps. I have to confess, I still delight in the bug-eyed looks and exclaimations of "No you aren't!" that I get when I tell my age. Even from sales reps. Neither of us wear much makeup most of the time, but free is free. :-)

Against all odds and without even looking, I also happened upon a purse that miraculously met my Impossibly Exacting Requirements for purses. That was good fortune, because my current purse was on its very last legs. I snapped it up at H&M for $16. Then we had drinkies at The Tam (best dive in the Theatre District) and called it a night.

Somewhere out there are our dresses. We just haven't found them yet.

Try the wrentham outlets if you can get transportation, down there.

Hmm, I've never been there. Do you remember what stores are there?

It's like wonderland!

Off Saks 5th is the best store for discount designer wear!

I had similar experiences last year when trying to find a formal gown for my cousin's wedding. Everything was godawfully ugly, hideous prints, unflattering cuts. I swear someone designed those on a drunken bet! I ended up buying 2 gowns via eBay, and one of them fit me perfectly. If you have a couple of weeks to spare, consider searching on eBay!

Unfortunately it's Columbus Day weekend, so we have to get 'em quick-like. I wish I was a more advanced sewer. That would have solved things.

I'm looking to spend as little as possible because, err, I currently need a size 12, but my normal size (when I haven't been as lazy as I've been this summer) is an 8-10. I'm planning to get back to that, so hopefully the 12 won't fit for very long. I'm so regretting not getting a dress last month when The Basement had so many pretty ones.

Understood. Finding the right thing on eBay can be time-consuming, not the best thing when you've only limited time to search.

Alternatively, have you checked local consignment shops, like Poor Little Rich Girl in the square, or checked with similarly-sized friends to see if you can borrow a frock?

I'm actually half-considering letting friends know about my current trove of gowns and garb to see if people want to borrow (or maybe even rent for a small amount) one of mine. I have some nice frocks, and they're in larger sizes, which could be quite helpful for larger women who have trouble finding pretty things to wear for special occasions.

Depending on what you need, I might be able to loan you something. I don't have any "gowns" per se, but I have a black dress, and a red one.

Let me know.

Well, I guess it's none of my business, but since when did that stop me so I'll say it anyway.

Please consider wearing something you already own. Who cares if you have worn it before, as long as it's clean and in good condition? I'll betcha the folks in the wedding have not seen you in it before and even if they have they won't remember and even if they did remember, which they won't because they'll be too busy doing other stuff and thinking about something else, I doubt they'd care.

Even the Queen of England re-uses her dresses. If she can do it, and she can *obviously* afford new clothes and the room to store them, anyone should feel free to. Yes, I know, it's not as much *fun*. So what? If you don't have enough time to make the search fun, you'll risk end up hating whatever you got in a hurry and you might not even enjoy wearing it once, much less multiple times. Also, it costs money you can spend somewhere else, like in the wedding gift or, even better, something you want to do. Which, I hasten to add, is not this one dress. Buy some *other* dress later that has nothing to do with the wedding and that you can wear multiple times to make _you_ feel good, not just to make you feel less guilty about attending a wedding. If I had to shop for clothes every time I go to a wedding, I would never to to one. I wear what I have, it's good enough for me. Why can't women feel just as free as we do? ;-)

Good luck!

PS: also, can someone explain to me why on this God's Earth it has to be a *dress* for a wedding? Can't you wear some smashing outfit you have, like a suit or something? I've seen you in smashing outfits, what's wrong with them? I thought the objective was to look fabulous, which you do, why buy more stuff?
