Win for Massachusetts!!!

No Ban On Same-Sex Marriage!

Thank you to the lawmakers and activists who worked so hard to protect the rights of gay and lesbian citizens to marry in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. And thank you to the lawmakers who previously supported a vote to ban gay marriage, who were willing to listen to the voice of reason, compassion, and equality and let it change their viewpoint.

I'm proud of my state. I'm proud of my Governor. Someday, I hope I can be proud of my country again.

And by a large margin too. I am so happy.

I am so proud of the Commonwealth. I'm always proud to tell people where I'm from, especially if they're from overseas.

Anyhow, I agree that the rights of a minority must be protected, even sometimes from democratic action of the majority.

If Civil Rights had been put to the vote down south back in the 60's, it never would have passed, yet today, we live in a society where all aspects of legal segregation have been abolished, and rightly so. But the fact that the issue was never voted on has led an angry (now) minority to simmer for decades, contributing to the backlash conservatism we see today (i.e., Angry White Male Syndrome).

Likewise, I believe that one day, the Same Sex Marriage issue will have to be democratically voted on in Massachusetts for the issue to finally be resolved. And I am certain that once people live with it and realize that OMG the world didn't end (duh), the issue will pass.

[livejournal.com profile] megalugz and I have been discussing making t-shirts that say on the front "Massachusetts- Gay Marriage and a Liberal Black Governor" on the front and either "You got a problem?" or "screw you" on the back
