Stand In The Place Where You Live

So we have Mainers, Vermonteers, New Hampshirites, New Yorkers, and Pennsylvanians. What is the correct designation for a person who lives in Massachusetts, other than a "Masshole?"

[identity profile] greenlily.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Bay Staters. Massachusetts is actually a Commonwealth, but let that pass, because 'Commonwealthies' sounds really stupid.

[identity profile] plumtreeblossom.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, and "Commonwealthies" sounds doubly stupid because there are other Commonwealths.

Bay Staters isn't quite it. That's a nickname, like Hoosiers or Tar Heels. Yet I've never heard anybody say "Massachusetters" or anything like that. If I had to coin one, I'd go for "Massachucians." Sounds all ritzy n'stuff.

Yeah, Pennsylvania's a Commonwealth too.

Every time I see that userpic I want to snuggle that adorable doggie. She is the cutest thing ever! :-)

Squeee! Corgi pup!

Bay Stater.

(Do people really say "Vermonteer" ?)

[identity profile] zzbottom.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
not in Vermont, we don't

[identity profile] plumtreeblossom.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
On Google they do, though. That there's where I got it.

[identity profile] skygoodwill.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that THE paperclip?

[identity profile] plumtreeblossom.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That paper clip userpic is from a defunct trade-up project that I started but never finished. The actual photo is from the Staples catalogue.

Yes I do recall. :)

No idea what's correct.
I use "Massachutian" in speech and "resident of Massachusetts" in writing.

[identity profile] rozasharn.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I spell it Massachusan. But that's only in my head; I haven't had occasion to write it down, nor do I recall seeing anyone else's solution written down until today.

I've wondered the same about Connecticut. Apparently, the answer is Nutmegger.

Nutmegger? That's weird!

Good to know (now that I'm down here in Bridgeport)...

[identity profile] vanguardcdk.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 03:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm...I've referred to myself as a Nebraskan several times but never thought about Massachusetts. Probably becuase I tend to revert to "Bostonian"

[personal profile] ron_newman 2008-05-14 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
What about someone from the state where Chicago is located? An Illinoisy?

[identity profile] plumtreeblossom.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing Illinoian, but [livejournal.com profile] beowabbit will know. He's a native son of there. I like Illinoid, myself.

Illinoisian, pronounced ill-annoyin'.

[identity profile] daisytells.livejournal.com 2008-05-15 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
A person from Illinois is known as a "Sucker" - at least it was so in the time of Abe Lincoln, when one of the lines in his campaign song was "the pride of the Suckers, so lucky". Dont ask me where the designation started, but it was over 150 years ago that Lincoln ran for the Presidency.

[personal profile] ron_newman 2008-05-14 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
My favorite such term is 'Michigander'.

[identity profile] strangeanimal.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm partial to "Haligonian" (Halifax, Nova Scotia) myself.

[identity profile] mistergoat.livejournal.com 2008-05-15 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually went on to this post specifically to mention the term "Michigander," being one myself.

[identity profile] spwebdesign.livejournal.com 2008-05-14 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Liberal? ;)

[identity profile] mistergoat.livejournal.com 2008-05-15 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Like Tom Finneran, or like Mitt Romney?

[identity profile] spwebdesign.livejournal.com 2008-05-15 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, I'm not saying it's necessarily appropriate, but the question was, "What are people from Massachusetts called?" :-p

[identity profile] mistergoat.livejournal.com 2008-05-16 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair enough--I was pretty much being a smart-ass.

[identity profile] daisytells.livejournal.com 2008-05-15 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
It's always been "Bay Stater" for me. "Masshole" is relatively new, and very unflattering. I think it started during the Reagan years at just about the time that "Liberal" suddenly and for the first time became a dirty word. What people do not realize about us is that over time we are generally proved to be correct.
