plumtreeblossom: (Hello Kitty)
One of my favorite romantic date destinations is the historic Canobie Lake Park, and that's where [livejournal.com profile] beowabbit and I spent our day yesterday. It was a perfect afternoon for it, not too hot, not at all crowded. We had snowcones while listening to the Dixieland band, played games, snuggled on the little train that circles the park, went on a variety of rides, and had ourselves a delightful time. [livejournal.com profile] beowabbit choked down his first-ever Coors Light. I had a sip. It tastes like what I call "dad beer." (the watery, soda-like off-brand beer that my stepfather drank, and which we kids swiped and got drunk on). But the ice cream and all the other yummies we enjoyed were great.

I made something of a quantum leap in the rides department. I have an acute and occasionally debilitating fear of open heights. This was not at all true when I was a child, but somehow acrophobia crept into my adult psychological make-up. My fear of falling from a great height is such that even a photo taken from a ledge or cliff can bring me close to fainting (incongruently, I do just fine on airplanes). So you'll understand what a challenge it was to go on the once-loved and now-feared cable car ride. They let me leave my backless sandles down on the ground, and up we went, my bare feet dangling in completely open sky. [livejournal.com profile] beowabbit was holding me very tightly, and I think he could have kept me from slipping out if I had fainted. Because of that safeguard, I was able to hang on tight and concentrate on remembering how much I enjoyed this ride as a child, full of trust and delighted to be way up in the sky like a bird. It worked, and I was able to return to terra firma glad that I had done it.

We stayed until early evening, winning lots of prize-exchangeable tickets thanks to his leet skillz at SkeeBall, and mine at the Chaser game. It's wonderful to have such a fun old park just a short drive away. A perfect date!
