I would classify almost all of these as memoir. Which, while it does fall under the catagorical umbrella of "non-fiction" (presuming authorial honesty), is a beast of its own in many ways. Considering though that LJ us used mostly by personal bloggers and diarists, memoir is probably the lion's share of what they received.
I wouldn't have thought to send memoir, though. When they said Non-Fiction Contest, to my mind that meant journalistic articles, which I have less experience in writing. I toyed with the idea of writing about community theatre, (thus bringing Theatre@First international fame if I won ;-)) but then things got all busy and I forgot all about the contest.
I'm so glad they chose writing by adults. Before I clicked the list of finalists, I was afraid it would be "lolz mah friendz n me r teh shitt" or whatever. Very glad there are so many mature, talented writers on LJ.
