Strangely enough, except for the "marriage under age 18" issue, I have no problems with the FLDS. Plural marriages don't bother me, if all agree to it. And since they have officially denied doing the marriage under age 18 schtick, if they want to wear puritanical clothing, have a strange hairdo, and spout their bible, for all I care they can call themselves FLDS or even Amish!
I just wish that they would send their 18 year olds out for a year "on their own" so they would know for themselves if they want to come back and live that sort of life or not.
I like long dresses, but those sleeves and shoulders are just too much. Also, I like long hair, but oh, those dos! By the way, did you check out the footwear? This rivals the Muslim covered up look in that although it is not completely covered, it is UGLY! It is my opinion that in both cases its purpose is to keep women from being looked at. Right? Oh, yeah, and probably so that they will "know their place".
I have purchased the kind of poly-cotton fabric they use many times, and it averages about $2.00 a yard retail (cheaper in bulk). At about 3 yards per dress, plus stitching thread and buttons, it can't cost more than $8 or $9 in materials costs per dress. That's one hell of a labor charge!
I'm totally fine with plural marriage if everyone involved is over 18 and a 100% consenting participant (and not coerced or manipulated into "consenting"). They may have officially denied the child bride thing, but that's very easy to cover up when all births are home births and records can easily be changed to make a 14-year-old suddenly 18 on-record.
There's a book you should read: God's Brothel by Andrea Moore-Emmett. It's the stories of 18 women and girls who escaped from religious child bride marriages. This is both FLDS and other sequestered religious communities that are, as we speak, institutionalizing the rape of girls in the name of religious freedom. These are real women who escaped after years of rape and incest, sometimes beginning before they were 12. It's horrifying, and it's essentially happening in our own back yards.
Actually, I suspect in this case there is a "dressing to fit in" element as well. Notice that all of those dresses look almost exactly alike? I don't think it's a coincidence. It's a way of showing you're part of the group - or perhaps the hive mind would be a better way of putting it?
I'm mystified over how they get those hairdos so high. My hair is only shoulder length so it wouldn't be long enough, but maybe one of my long haired friends can explain. What I don't understand is how, if they're supposed to present themselves with modesty and non-vanity, they can justify the time it would take to make that hairdo every day. I think the Amish get it better.
think "Bouffant" or "Beehive" hairdos of the early 60's. Hair teasing and lots of hairspray are the likely culprits. But you can't do that in a humid area.
The Amish also dress a lot nicer. They are every bit as modest, if you care for that term, but they look nice in their neat little caps and their aprons. They are dressed to work, but do not look frumpy.
