I've been asking myself lately what my dream job would be if I could make it happen. You know what, deep down, I really just want? I want to own a coffee house. Nothing more. My own coffee house, or a tea house, right in the middle of some funky neighborhood like Davis Square or somewhere like that, maybe not even in the Boston area. But somewhere where creative, interesting people need a place to congregate and relax. I don't care that I'd never make much money. What appeals is the idea of creating an environment where people can enjoy themselves.
My coffee house would have these things:
Live acoustic music nightly
Poetry jams
Local artists' shows on the walls
A leave-one/take-one free book exchange rack
Tables and chairs decorated by local artists
Mis-matched mugs and saucers
Internet connections
Seating outdoors whenever possible
Exotic teas of the world
Ass-kicking coffee
Locally baked treats, hot soup, various yummy things
I've fantasized about owning a coffee house for a long time. I wonder if it's possible that this doesn't need to be a fantasy forever. I'm eventually going to come into a sum of money via an inheritance. Maybe this is what I’d like to do with it. I want my career to be something I love doing, something that isn't an interference in my life, but is a integral part of my life itself. I'm not happy working for someone else, and while I'm not the entrepreneurial type, I am the... well... coffee house type.
Who knows?
