UMBRELLA CINEMATIQUE

Monday morning rain
I hurried along College Avenue
and saw you walking too
on the sidewalk
the opposite sidewalk
Sharing an umbrella

And the curving avenue turned into
a black and white foreign film in my mind
in a language I don’t know
without subtitles
every visible person became an actor
walking both sides
of the wet steel river of cars

I couldn’t wave to you, or meet your eye
was frozen in that black and white scene
I rushed ahead under my umbrella
but my mind sent out to yours
