I’ve tried all day to write a coherent travelogue about the weekend trip to the Mojave and Death Valley, but for once I just can’t, so I’m letting myself off the hook. I went for so many emotional reasons that simply don’t translate into Oxford English or any cerebral language. Running away from, running to, needing something far larger than my life and its slamming pendulum of happiness and hurt to give a slice of perspective. It helped. Heartfelt thanks to the lifelong friend I shared this journey with, who drove us over 600 miles in two days. When you stand in a vast basin of hot stone and desert flora and turn 360 degrees, with a horizon of lunaresque mountains surrounding you and not one building, not one street or stoplight or phone pole or coughing MBTA bus in your line of vision, you remember things you never knew.

Huh. That shouldn’t be a travelogue. It would be a better monologue.

Tomorrow night I’m trying out a meditation group in Central Square, since I no longer have one to go to and I miss it terribly. I find I don’t meditate well in my own house and need a neutral environment that isn’t full of my own tempestial energy. I’m not quite certain how I feel about paying $5 to meditate, but I understand their need to cover overhead cooperatively. It’s a place I read about in Rachel’s journal. I hope I’ll like it.
