A Story Pimp and Me
Mar. 9th, 2006 01:56 pmSeems like someone, and not me, is selling on Amazon a short story I published in The Antioch Review in 1998. I don't know who it is.
This has been happening ever since that particular story got print-only published. On the contract I signed away my First North American Serial Rights, but at the time, Electronic Rights and Fair Use rights were in a very hazy, nebulous state. I first saw the story being sold on Northern Lights, upon whom a class-action suit was brought down (I didn't hear about it soon enough to get involved). But Amazon?
My co-worker just said "Well, at least you're out there getting read." Part of me wants to look at it that way, and just accept that we now live in a wiki world. But for goodness sake, if you want to read it, don't line this guy's pockets when you can read it for free on my website. I feel like posting that link on the customer comments section of that Amazon page.
What I really need to find out is how this affects my own republishing rights to the story, It's my favorite, and if I ever publish a short story collection I'm going to want that in it. I guess I'll contact Antioch, since I saw other Antioch authors' stories being sold by this person. I'm glad the story is still out there being enjoyed, but it is still mine...
