After looking into the story pimp redistribution matter yesterday, I've decided to just not get mad about this whole thing. According to Antioch Review, a number of years ago they released about 100 of their most popular stories for online-only redistribution, a move that apparently does fall within the letter of fair use laws.
Antioch got a little money for it (they're perpetually in the hole), and reprint rights do belong to me and no one else, so I'd be free to include it in a short story collection if I ever published one.
And when I really think about it, my co-worker is right -- at least my name is out there and I'm getting read. Where would the story be otherwise? Languishing these past 8 years in Antioch's dusty hardcopy library, and on my own shelf, probably never to be read by human eyes ever again. Would I really rather have that? No.
Also, to be one of Antioch's most popular 100? Sweet! (A Pushcart Prize nomination would have been nice, but whatever.) The story is still alive out there and being read because of the redistribution. I really can't be upset about that.
And wouldn't a healthier attitude be to stop worrying about a story I wrote 8 years ago, and instead to quit dicking around and get back to writing with intent to publish?
I think so.
