Taking a spin through Hootenanny and Urban Outfitters last night, it was blaringly apparent that, now that the revival of the best 80s fashions is so 2 years ago, they're going for the 80s worst. I didn't know what I wanted when I went in, but it definitely wasn't a foofy neon tulle skirt circa Like A Virgin.

And yipes, horizontal stripes?! This is 2006 – we're all too fat for that, so I guess not enough focus groups happened or something. Those striped rugby shirts with the white collars were a chilling reminder of high school. I found pegged jeans, just like I wore back in the day. Every pair of pants I owned then was pegged, except they didn't come that way from the store; you had to do it yourself. If I'd seen an Izod aligator, the Jihad would be on. I was in the middle of thinking "Revival, revival, revival. Can we please have something new to wear?" when I happened upon a God-insulting one-piece marriage of culottes and a tube top. In Marine Corps blue. Be careful what you wish for. I think it was the first time I left Urban Outfitters without buying anything.

****
I can't believe I missed a double episode of Bourdain last night. I got all involved in a little creative project and completely forgot what night it was. This morning I was all "This is Tuesday. Something was supposed to happen last night that didn't..." Then the Oh Noooo. I waffle about getting TiVo, because to do so would be to acknowledge that I do occasionally watch TV. When the season ends and the DVD comes out, don't even bother calling.

And yipes, horizontal stripes

No kidding; I recently did the rounds of Hootenanny/Hubba Hubba/Garment District/und so weiter looking for something stripey and only finding horizontal not vertical or diagonal. You have to be a stick to wear horizontal, and even if I was the effect of 'post-industrial gondolier' or 'gothic mime' isn't really what I'm trying for. It only works on the Dresden Dolls because they can carry off that Joel Grey sinister ambiance.
