It was around this time in about 1975 when my brother and I earned spankings for digging an oblong 3-foot-long hole in our grandmother's back yard. Grandma came out to check on us, knowing that if we weren't making noise we were up to no good, saw the freshly gaping maw in her lawn and wailed "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!?!"

Was it not completely obvious that we were building an in-ground pool? We were going to line it with plastic garbage bags and fill it up with the hose. How fracking cool was that? There was only one shovel and he was stronger, so he was using it while I was dog-digging. Busted.

Only thinking about it today because of the heat, and... wouldn't it still be fracking cool? :-p

I love that story. It is frustrating to hear how the creative endeavors of children are mndlessly cast away though. It is a fabulous idea that I envy you for having thought of as a child.

We thought so! All the long walks to the public pool that could have been avoided, all the fame and popularity we would have gained as the only kids in the 'hood with more than just an inflatable baby pool... we were going for the BIG time! And when the swimming novelty wore off, we could have pulled out the plastic and had a renne faire-style mud pit theatre! :-)

Grandma ran in and got Grandpa and my Mom. We were spanked on the spot and sent indoors. Grandpa had to fill in the hole and put down new grass seed. Probably a more appropriate punishment would have been to make us fill in the hole ourselves whilst pondering the damage we had wrought. But as it was we just sat inside sulking that our visionary pool scheme had been foiled.

After that we built a haunted house in the basement.

Bet your project would have endured better than the Big Dig seems to be, and you presumably didn't even hit the government up for money!
