I went with Rob and Jude to the New Neighborhood party last night, but the wilting heat made it sort of a bust. It's been hot up there before, but the swampy humidity made it difficult to even stand upright without leaning on something (let alone be witty and blithe) and they'd run out of ice by the time we got there. I got to briefly say hello to a few people, but we were all just sticky messes, much too icky for hugs. (though I must say, our host with his Hawaiian shirt fully open was a beautiful sight to behold). After a few airless minutes we three grabbed beers and went down to the front porch which was a few degrees cooler.

My roomie showed up and we decided to exchange one hot porch for another -- at least there was ice at Jude's. We all chatted and sipped alcoholic bevvies for a few hours. It probably would have lasted longer, but I had completely exhausted myself all day with tense energy, and was toast physically and emotionally. Time to get home.

I need to not drink tequilla. It affects me differently than other spirits, and my head was throbbing this morning. For most of the weekend I've been hiding away in the tiny oasis of my air-conditioned bedroom, but even with the (new and efficiently working) AC cranked it's now approaching 80 degrees in here and will get hotter. I've also run out of tasks I can do in here. Out in the living room yesterday the thermostat registered 106 degrees. That nearly danger-level. If I wanted this kind of monsterous heat I'd go live in Florida.

I'm going out with a new friend tonight. We were planning to go to a sculpture garden, but if it doesn't cool off significantly I think I'll have to ask him if we can switch to something indoors. When you're of Russian/Eastern Euro/Scottish ethnicity with the genetics of peoples who herded reindeer and sheep across frosty steppes all day, this heat is impossible to take. I saw someone with a Samoyed dog who had given the poor overheated pup a crew cut for some comfort. I was envious.

UPDATE: Thunder and lightning and torrential rain likely tonight. Sweet.
