In dealing with the where-to-stay-cheap in New York thing, I discovered something interesting on CraigsList. It seems there are a good number of people and families in Brooklyn with an extra bedroom who rent it out by the week to travelers, for insanely low rates like $160 a week. A whole week for $160. That's the price of one night in a hotel (or 2 nights at Sohotel or a hostel). It's probably not pro-rated if you stay for fewer days, but who cares at that pittance-y price? These are in neighborhoods I'm interested in, too.
How cool would that be to stay with a resident family and get their POV on daily life in their area? Sure, it doesn't afford the privacy that a hotel would, but I'm not going there to get laid.
There would of course be the skeevy single men who only rent to women factor to avoid (and there were a few -- requiring photos!), but a stay in the home of a family or a female could be an edifying way to get a sense living there. Not to mention a cost-effective one.
In the mean time, put down your latte and your Utne Reader and go Slap That Ho!
