I am so enjoying the process of creating my character in rehearsals. It's hard work, but the payoff is already evident. M. Quickly is already developing layers that had yet to be discovered at the onset. And the physical humor is blossoming, not just for me but for everyone, now that we're getting further and further off-book.

A benefit to not having seen a previous production of this play is that the character is all mine to invent from the ground up. There's a video of a PBS or BBC production available on Amazon, but I'm not going to get it until after the show. I did take some time to google cast photos from other regional productions, just to see the other incarnations she's taken via other actresses. The range of look, style, age, and body type is just enormous. It such a wonderfully flexible character. Commonly, she seems to be presented as a frisky version of the Nurse in Romeo and Juliet. But not always. She's played by young and old, big or little, perky or scold-y. (I still think it should be a male-in-drag role!) This photo was the one that seemed closest to my own Quickly’s personality and style:

She looks like a fun gal, doesn't she? I hope [livejournal.com profile] spwebdesign has a cute red nose like that. :-)

There's nothing really to photograph from our production yet. But I will be taking and posting costume-y backstage and onstage photos once there's something to show.

Absolute non sequiter – If you didn't go to the Central Square Festival this past weekend, you should go next year. It's very exciting, and much more pan-ethnic than any other festival. It deserves a post of it's own, but my time will be limited these next few days. There were numerous stages featuring music from all over the world, and I got to see The Petey playing with his reggae band. After their set we strolled around with our friend Wayne, watched some wonderful dance, and ate Indian outdoors. It was so good to see Peter. It's been over a year. He gave me a ride home on his way back to Northampton, and I gave him one of my Death Cab For Cutie CDs because he hadn't heard them and I thought he'd like them a lot (I can just get another). Looks like I may be spending my Halloween weekend out there, at a huge weekend-long barn party. That sure works.
