plumtreeblossom: (news)
Sometimes Dan Savage is patently full of shit. I've liked his column for a long time, but I'm increasingly noticing his habit of pulling "facts" out of thin air based exclusively on his own personal experience and nothing else. This week, he had this to declare at Customs:

...adult gay men rarely, if ever, decide to change their gender. I've been out of the closet for more than two decades now (since I was 7 years old), and in all that time, I've never known a single adult gay man who decided — particularly in midlife — to run off and become a woman. The only men I've known who changed their gender as adults were heterosexually identified men who now identify as lesbians.

No problem that you've never met one, Dan, but I have. Genuine, certified flamingly homosexual men who became straight women. Since Dan hasn't experienced it in his apparently rather narrow sphere of experience, it doesn't exist. Much like his "fact" that there are no bisexual males, because Dan is not keen on bisexuals in general. Right-o.

It used to be he would often consult with an expert when met with a question he couldn't difinitively answer himself, which made his responses helpful rather than dismissive and impatient. More and more now, I'm seeing him spew blanket generalizations that have absolutely no grounding in reality. I hope all the transwomen who formerly were gay men write in and clock him with the clue-by-four. What nobody needs is a sex columnist who won't do his homework.
