plumtreeblossom: (WTF?)
I have several friends who recently have or will soon be experiencing the passing of a beloved, sick pet. I want all of you to know that my heart goes out to you, and I'm here for you. Losing a pet, especially an elderly pet who has been a loving part of your life for years, is a loss like no other, and the pain is sometimes not understood or appreciated. Please know that I understand and am available to help if there's anything at all I can do.

Decisions can be agonizing. When my elderly Rowley threw a blood clot and was instantly and painfully paralyzed, there was absolutely no question what had to happen, and I was thus spared the decision. The support of friends and loved ones carried me through. I intend to return that support to anyone who needs it.

I wish I could offer more tangible help like rides to the vet, but what I can offer is empathy and company. You can cry your eyes out with me. I won't push you towards the nearest shelter to get a replacement. It takes time to heal. But I will tell you, it gets easier over time. In time, the happy memories will outweigh the pain of right now, and you'll get to keep those memories forever. It took awhile for my tears to dry, but now when I talk about Rowley, it's usually a funny story about something outrageous he did. In that way, he's still alive inside me, as yours will be inside of you.

Big, big hugs to each of you.
