Born Again Onions
Oct. 24th, 2010 02:13 pmWhile poking in the fridge this morning, I found in a seldom used drawer 4 white onions that had been there since approximately February. The onions had sent out thick, long shoots, some of them 8 or 9 inches long. I'd never seen this phenomenon before.
At first I was mortified, but on second inspection, they looked sort of...yummy.
beowabbit took a little taste of a shoot, and gave it the thumbs up. Since I was making scrambled eggs as part of our Lyndell's brunch, I chopped up two shoots, lightly sauteed them in butter, and added them to the scrambled eggs and cheddar mixture. Delicious! And they made the kitchen smell so wonderful.
Wabbit wondered if I should plant them. I wondered the same thing. So since I had an unoccupied planter of soil that can be brought in before first frost, I planted the onions with the shoots sticking out.
So my two questions:
What are these shoots? They're like garlic scapes except from white onions.
And was planting them dumb/clueless? I'm so new to farming that I really don't know. Should I use them up now instead? They were so tasty that I'd hate to waste them.
