The Wind

For those not in the Boston area today, the wind is like unto a frozen Antarctic blast that makes walking outside patently unsafe. I work in the Copley Square area downtown, which could be one of the windiest urban areas in the United States whether winter or summer, or at least seems so. Just now I was crossing Saint James Street, and it took every bit of my strength to get across the street with the wind hitting me from the side. I had to lean FULL weight into it or be blown over. If wind like that can almost blow 140-pound me off the ground, it could definitely send a 50-pound child tumbling head over heels into oncoming traffic. Do not bring children or pets into downtown today.

So, the laffy part of this is...who do you complain to? The only way it could be worse is if the ice sheets of last week were still on the ground, and in some places new ones are forming. It would have been a fine luxury to stay home due to the weather, but unfortunately that luxury doesn't belong to one such as I. And so, Boston wind, you get to blow me.

Ye gods...I was just wondering how the Copley area was doing today! I used to work in the old John Hancock Building, and never got used to seeing smaller pedestrians clinging to street signs and lampposts on days like this. Who designed this silliness, anyhow?

I've ridden my bicycle down St. James from downtown, and found myself nearly blown off the road as I reached Copley Square.

My skin is red and windburned just from being out in it for a few minutes. I'm not exaggerating when I say it could blow the skin right off your face if you stood facing into it for an hour. Which I don't advise.

I was clinging onto a pole at one point. Usually I see people with dogs on leashes down here, but I'm glad I haven't seen any today. Even a fairly large dog would be turned into a kite. Wanna go home!

I hear ya. It was also my bad not to button up my long coat all the way to the bottom. It caught the wind like a sail and made things hella worse.

Wind blows, and most other weather sucks. Barometric whores, all of 'em.

It's dangerous, really. That wind on St. James would have been too much for an elderly person. I'm pretty sturdy and it nearly too me out. Boylston is awful, too.

I am so glad that I can cut through a building at the way to the T.

I so want to go home. The thought of going to rehearsal tonight makes me tired.

It's spring here. Yep. Daffodils and all. You need to come and see for yourself...

Copley's a breeze. The windiest part of Boston is Beacon Hill, where I work. Because it's so high, and because my street, Ashburton Place, is dominated by two tall buildings, it's a wind tunnel every day of the year.

It was awful this morning and I only walked as far as Back Bay Station to the Hancock. It was definitely creepy being in the Hancock - the windows rattle all day long on windy days like this. And I sit right next to one.

Agreed. Years ago I lived in Beacon Hill and worked downtown, and I walked through Ashburton Place twice a day. Nasty place on days like this.

Ha!

I've heard that in fact, Boston is the windiest city, not Chicago. (Chicago is so named because of the politicians, I hear.)
