I can say without reserve -- 28 Weeks Later is a scary-ass movie.

It was a surprise fright-fest, because I hadn't known they were making a sequel until someone mentioned it on LJ. While I certainly enjoyed the original 28 Days Later and considered it a classic of the zombie genre, this was one of those rare sequels that was scarier than the first. It picks up 6 months after Great Britain is toasted by the simian-human viral plague called Rage. The United States Army has declared a central sanctuary of London to have been freed and cleared of infection, thanks to their efforts. Ah, hubris.

There is no sentimentality, no hokey romantic tension. The old characters are gone and we don't get to know the new characters very well, but it doesn't matter. The infected are back. Run.

My one nit-pick is that the infected seem to have lost some of that hyper speed, herky-jerky movement that made them so scary in the original. They locomote more naturally and are capable of standing still, which I think was a wrong directorial choice. But they still chow a lot of flesh.

Whether you'll like it depends on how you respond to the startle effect, which is heavily employed. I had to clutch [livejournal.com profile] beowabbit's arm and had my face buried in his shoulder numerous times. If you're the jumpy type like me, prepare to be physically worn out by the end, when it's more or less promised that we'll get to find out how things are going down 28 months hence.

I'm impressed that a zombie-genre movie series can be this good while technically having no zombies. The infected live humans are thus insanely easy to kill. But there are more of them on the way...

You should see the director's first film (especially in light of your Vegas trip): it's a spanish film called Intacto, and it's about the accumulation of luck and it's use in an unusual gambling scheme. It's one of the most fascinating films I've ever seen, and it's extremely well made.
