plumtreeblossom: (Be Friends)

AS SEEN IN TODAY'S METRO:

Tonight the District Lounge in Boston is hosting a Yankee Swap Your Ex Party for split-up couples. If you have an ex who you're still friends with, you can go together and hopefully swap each other out for other people's exes.

The wonderful audacity of this amuses me greatly. I have an ex who I'm still friends with, but unfortunately he's neither local nor available. Too bad -- this would be jolly fun, in a vaguely just-shoot-me kind of way.

Eh.
Then again, I can count the number of exes who are still talking to me with one digit.

Nine? Not bad, really.

One anatomical digit, not one mathematical digit.

It would be kinda neat if you met someone you liked, because then you could stroll off for a drink with the ex to get the full skinny.

"So, what's he like as a boyfriend?"

"He's a totally sweet guy and he going to make someone very happy. Just not, um, me."

Hm... this makes me wonder: what quantity is measured by the percentage of one's exes who are currently happily attached? :)

That's a good question. In my case, I've short-term dated several people who married the very next person they dated after me. It can give a girl a complex! But I'm happy for them.

I've heard about this for years. It's just another variation on the "bring an eligible MOTAS" party, which I think is a fun idea and have pondered throwing. Presumably one can vouch at a... deeper level for an ex than for a friend. :)

No, I meant someone else. I can't really think of B as an ex, since we wern't officially ever an item. But I heard that B and S got married a few months ago! I'm happy for them.

I've actually lost track of him for the last 2 years or so. How's he doing?

I'd be happy to write a letter of recommendation for most of my exes. Of course, most of them would also have a warning or two about things I learned the hard way ("Don't get fat, or he'll dump you," "He was badly abused as a child, and closeness scares him, so you have to let any increase in closeness come from HIM," "She's married to her job, so you need to have a consuming interest of your own or at least, a hell of a lot of other friends or lovers"), but for most of my lovers, my most lukewarm rec would be "You could do a lot worse," and some folks would get "X is a truly fascinating person, and just being able to talk with him is worth a lot" or even "You haven't lived until you've had sex with Y." *grin*
