My hair is way, way, way too dark for my liking. Unless I'm in direct sunlight, it looks like the goth black I was dying it 20 years ago. I don't want this severe a look. Nice, sedate, medium browns are the colors I see on the boxes of coloring I purchase and use. But apparently my hair has become too porous, and the result is just-this-side-of-black. Do not want.

I guess that once I get back from the holidays, I'll just have to suck it up and have a stylist get it back to a color I like. This is not something that's in my routine beauty ablutions budget, so it will have to be on the understanding that I'll be doing the root touch-ups myself at home, and thus the color choice has to facilitate that. Sometimes I miss my blond phase, but it really wasn't compatible with my skin tone (it made me look sunburn red all the time). A simple, pretty brown is what I'm after.

Is increased porousness part of *cough* natural maturation in hair, or due to the color work, do you know?

I've been fussing with what color to do my hair too(though half-curious to see what the natural grey is actually like- I'll investigate in maybe 5 years! lol), and have also concluded I need economical stylist help to work out something reasonable. Is too much for me alone!

It's porous from being dyed. I have to do the roots every 3 weeks, but usually I just do the roots and not the rest. This time I just decided to give all of it a color boost, using a color called "neutral medium brown," and I got almost black. I expect it will fade a bit with a number of washings, but it's dark-ass-dark right now!

I wonder if using a "warm" tone brown rather than a "neutral" would give better results?

I've thought of that, but I fear it would come out too red...
