plumtreeblossom: (I Want To Believe)

I'd been pretty lax (and by "lax" I mean "100% negligent") about brushing my two cats, because they're short-haired and so there are never knots or snarls. But poor [livejournal.com profile] beowabbit's cat allergies have been particularly unpleasant for him lately, so I vowed to be more proactive about shedding management.

To that end, I bought a cat brush and comb. I wasn't sure if either cat would tolerate it. But it turns out they both LOVE it, and they compete for who gets the most brushing. I can't believe how much hair came off them! Especially Ben-Ben; I filled the brush 3 times from him alone. And even ultra-short-haired Rowley had a lot of shed. The brushing also picks up dander, which is gross but helpful in allergen reduction around here. They look very sleek and pretty now, and are going to get regular brush time from now on.

And hopefully less allergens for my sweetie and other cat-allergic guests to deal with. :-)

Spraying with tannic acid is good for breaking down cat allergens. Make black tea as strong as you can, then dilute it down far enough to not stain fabrics you are applying it to. Put in a spray bottle and mist allergen covered stuff.

My husband just gave the cats all a good brushing yesterday, too. They were quite happy about it!

Oh yes, the kitties, they love the brushing. At least, all the cats I ever kept did.

Id suggest looking into a shedding blade (http://www.petsmart.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=2767075&f=Taxonomy%2FPET%2F2767075&f=PAD%2FType+1%2FShedding+Blades&fbc=1&fbn=Type+1|Shedding+Blades&fbx=0&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=5685166&utm_campaign=rkg_-_dog)

They are easy to use and they don't fill up with fur. Of course the fur ends up at the end of the cat and has to be cleaned up afterward but its a great way to get a lot of fur off a cat in a short amount of time. I find them to be much more useful than the combs and brushes.
