Hell hasn't yet frozen over, but Boston has. It was insanely difficult to make myself leave home and venture out into the icy air. In spite of the bright sunny sky, my hands and feet became chunks of frozen meat on my walk to the T. My office is cold too, and I'm wearing a scarf and wish I had some fingerless gloves. Two things I'm going to buy this year that I've never owned before are long underwear and electric socks.

I would really have loved staying home today. All I want to do today is hide in my wee abode and bake things, snuggle the kitties, send romantic text messages to the Wabbit, and nap.

Yesterday was the first day I wore my parka since some time in March or April. So to me, it was the real first day of winter.

Yup!

Electric socks? Do tell. And are there electric gloves? That's what I really want. I wore both glove liners & fleece gloves today, and my hands were freezing for the whole 4-hour ride to my office. Given that I intend to keep biking through winter (and it will presumably only get colder) I suppose I should do something about this.

Yes, you can get electric (battery-operated) socks and gloves at sporting goods stores, or order them online (a google search will turn up many). I've always wanted some so this year is it.

Wow, you biked for 4 hours today? Or did you mean 4 miles?

I personally love "Cuddl Duds" (yes that's the correct spelling). Get the ones that are 50% nylon and 50% cotton and you can wear them under your clothes WITHOUT getting overheated - unless it's really warm, that is. But they are very versatile.

They have a few different types, but I find that the cotton/nylon blend is perfect for me. The cotton is soft and the nylon allows your clothing to move/slide normally over the long johns.

Amazon.com has many vendors selling this. You may be able to find it in person - they don't sell directly from their website but they will tell you their vendors.

Imagine coming back from FL to this cold! Talk about a shock to the system when I stepped out of the airport last night.

I second the Cuddl Duds recommendation. I couldn't survive winter without them. I've found them in Sears and JCPenney if you don't want to order online.
