Oh my, tears of joy are falling here. Octogenarian folk legend and activist Pete Seeger leads the celebrating crowd at the Lincoln Memorial in singing the real lyrics to Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land."

I just saw this on another friend's page. Don't you feel like Pete Seeger is like, "FINALLY! This is what the song is really about!" Amazing performance.

I'm so happy that he lived to see this inauguration day, and could be a part of it! It's the kind of change he's worked for all his life.

I cried like a schoolgirl when I saw Pete come out. He was there during the Civil Rights Movement and is credited with bringing "We Shall Overcome" to Dr. King's attention and eventually the song becoming the anthem of the movement. Pete has always been a hero of mine (I learned to play banjo from his instruction book. LOL) and I am thrilled he lived to be a part of this wonderful moment in history

It's no secret that Pete is one of my heroes -- have you seen the entry on my LJ asking people to click on a site that sponsors him for the Nobel Peace Prize?
I missed the broadcast, and now I cannot get the video because apparently HBO has copyrighted the broadcast -- but howcum they are allowed to copyright Woody's song as sung by Pete? It ought to be illegal. That song has been in the public domain for ages! And Pete copyrights little or nothing.
I wonder if anyone out there had the foresight to copy that video while it was still active? I would really like to see it.

I don't know about HBO in the US, but they are rerunning the concert tomorrow night on HBO Canada.

I've been completely smooshy all day over that performance.
5 minutes ago, there was a YT link that worked that seems to be of foreign origin

Thanks for the link - I just saw it, and cried all the way through. Old Pete, God bless him. He's been with us since the Great depression, fighting for the little guy, fighting for peace and justice, fighting racial and any other type of discrimination. Called before the House UnAmerican Activities Committee in the 1950's and banned from the airwaves from early 1950's until the late 1960's or early 1970's, he went live on tour around America. He got us all singing songs of freedom and justice -- and MEANING it. He worked to educate us about the ecology long before it became a popular cause. Oh, Hell, there's no way to do justice to him -- it would take volumes...
