I Queer Eyed The Filing System

I’m between editing projects this week, and had time for office beautification. As any of you who have been to my house know, I’m no interior decorator, but I’m a regular Fab 5er about filing systems.

One of the perks of my job is that I’m one of the few people on my floor authorized to order things from Staples. I can order anything we need, or anything I decide we need, and answer to no authority but myself on the matter.

Our publishing proposal filing system was an antiquated embodiment of Hell’s Junk Drawer. Everyone hated using it and it served as nothing but an eyesore. So, having spare time and the power to change it, I chucked the ratty old gray binders that housed the files and ordered hanging file folders in 14 different colors. I appropriated a nice unused filing cabinet and moved everything into it. Each book discipline has it’s own color: red, yellow, blue, green, purple, orange, brown, pink, goldenrod, teal, tan, white, baby blue, mint. Now the files are rainbow pretty and more functional than before.

Oh things just keep gettin’ better…. ;-)

Oh, I love doing that! Bringing order to the universe, creating functionality out of chaos...it's such a satisfying feeling!

The difference is, you're able to do it with people; I can only do it with things. :-) It does look better now though.
