Yesterday all three of the online purchases I was waiting for arrived. It was like Christmas (well, a Christmas where I only buy presents for myself). And like Christmas, there were surprises.

The first was a pretty forest green gothic top from HolyClothing.com. The sizing chart said I should get size XL/1X. I did so, but I'm kind of swimming in it. The bust in particular is much bigger than I can fill and so the shoulders droop a bit. I can still wear it though, and it's not worth the trouble of shipping back for exchange. And because it's rayon, I can shrink it a little in the dryer (note to others: never put rayon in the dryer unless you want to shrink something).

Next, the H.G.Wells First Men In The Moon paperback that I thought I ordered from Amazon (I'm on an early sci-fi kick) turned out to be the DVD of the 1964 movie instead. Oops. Well, maybe some of us can get together for some shlocky '60s B-movie goodness.

Speaking of the '60s, the third item was season 1 of Mad Men. The cool surprise was that it came in a cleverly designed box shaped like a giant Zippo lighter. I barely ever watch TV, but I've gotten addicted to Mad Men clips on Youtube. This will be the first season collection of a TV show I've ever watched. For some reason I really enjoy gaping at the culture shock of their in-office drinking and smoking, the unapologetic sexism, the rampant intra-office sex, etc. I'm very glad I was only a baby in the 1960s.

So yes, new stuff for me.

Pandemonium just got in over 300 paperbacks (I think that's what T. said) from someone getting rid of their old/obscure sci fi books. You might find some gems in the store, if you catch them before others get to them!

Where is Pandemonium? I don't think I've ever been there.

Hours are noon-10 pm every day except Sundays; Sundays are noon to 6 pm. They're in Central Square, one block from the Prospect/Mass Ave corner headed towards Harvard, behind the 7-11 which is on Mass Ave. It's across the street from the BIG Post Office.

You ought to go there. :) Remember, I have no bias; I'm merely engaged to the owner (grin grin grin).

I dont recall any drinking in the office during the sixties, but yes, there was smoking and I was a smoker back then. Very comfortable. Definite sexism, but not much actual hanky-panky (at least publicly, all on the QT).
Work was much nicer then, in spite of the smoke and sexism. I went on and on here, as usual, so am copying out the rest and pasting it as a post on my LJ.

I look forward to reading it! My only memories of the '60s are what a young child would know. My parents smoked right in front of me, and I remember being allowed to play with my dad's Zippo lighter. How things change!

It's unclear to me that Mad Men is at all a realistic portrayal of life back then, but I don't care -- I've enjoyed watching it. Hottest sex scenes on TV!

Apparently Mad Men parties were all the rage during the 1st season. But nobody really smokes anymore. They could hire me as a professional smoker. :-)

An earlier example of life, death and mating rituals in the jungle of the Big City Office is The Best of Everything (1959); virtually every woman in the film is destroyed.

The British science fiction TV series UFO, which ran 1970-71, was set in the far-flung year of 1984, and people smoked like chimneys! Great sense of style, though, and furthermore some women held command rank.

I just got another little (very little; it cost me $5, including intercontinental shipping) surprise; remind me to give it to you on Thursday.
