Well, I wasn't expecting Rowley's vet visit to cost $328. Angell Memorial is wonderful in the care they give, but I had estimated somewhat less (and that's what I get for not asking). Luckily, I still hadn't spent most of my work bonus, so the funds were there. The doctor assigned to us (we don't have a regular one, but it seems they're all good at Angell) was wonderful and very thorough.

The diagnosis is that his extreme weight loss is due to kidney disease. It's not the end of the world for him. He's being put on a new low-protein diet, and they're going to train me and [livejournal.com profile] beowabbit to give him sub-cutaneous hydration. Rowley is an old geezer, so this is actually better news than it could have been.

My [livejournal.com profile] beowabbit drove us there, and he is the very best partner and cat papa in the entire universe. He was right there at our side the whole time, giving support and love. Words can't describe how much I love him. Ceiling Cat was also watching over all of us, from the vantage point of the T-shirt [livejournal.com profile] beowabbit gave me.

These things are true for today:

*I have some yard work to do

*I'm going to have to accept the fine for filing taxes late, and should do it today

*It's very hot in this 3rd floor apartment

*Giant bumble bees the size of almonds have taken up residence somewhere near my balcony

*I wish breakfast would make itself

*I greatly enjoyed The Winter's Tale on Friday, but had no business going to see live theatre while still suffering residual cough from my cold (sorry, guys).

*It's time to get my day started

I am so glad that there was a diagnosis for Rowley.

And I've seen those bees around. They're frighteningly large.

Yup, Angell (and the place in Woburn, as well) are very expensive, but great to have if you need to bring in a critter after hours. They also have a reputation of giving you the option of more tests than are "necessary" and will offer $$$ options to keep your critter alive, whereas a local vet might mention the options and recommend alternatives that might give your critter a better quality of life for the time they have left.

Kidney: keep your critter eating and drinking, and if I could find it in myself to give my own cat a shot of fluids, anyone can.

I'm glad to hear Rowley's diagnosis was not tragic.
The giant bee's you see are the queens they are out looking for hot drones to settle down with and start family, or rather a nation.
They'll soon disappear to do that queen thang and we'll see the smaller worker bees out and about.
Despite being a little skittish I almost got nose to nose with a hovering queen bee yesterday.

I wondered if the bees were queens! One huge bee will be hovering about on the balcony. Now and then a 2nd huge bee will show up, and the two will have a violent ariel fight. Then it will be one bee again for a while. Maybe they're queen candidates fighting for rule of the hive? I wish their jousting ring were on someone else's balcony!

You can see a picture of Rowley here:

He's an elegant old gent. Hopefully he'll be in better health very soon.

Good to see you posting on LJ!
