I'm really surprised that I can't find an elder care community on LJ. I'm at a point in life where I'm going to need to start thinking about this with regard to my mom, and I have lots of questions. Also, I just really need to talk with others about it.

If I can't find one, would anyone here join (and/or help spread the word) if I started a new community up?

I'd definitely join. My father is in hospice and my mom also requires pretty much daily care. Its tough being away from Cleveland, as I feel guilty how much my brother has to do.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that! I'm in the same boat -- my mother is in a suburb Rochester, NY, and my brother and his daughter live at her house and do most of the running of it. I feel like there are ways I could help from afar, but I don't know what those things are and just really need to talk to people who have an understanding of elder care.

Seems there are a number of us interested in the topic.

The closest thing I could find that is at all active is [livejournal.com profile] elder_caregiver. You may want to ask there, too.

Looking pretty slow over there. I suppose we could all join en mass and make it active, but I'd kind of like some control over the tone and direction of the comm, if it's to be useful for most of us.

Sure, I just meant you could ask for tips there. And also advertise your new comm, of course. It's not that active, but posts seem to get replies, anyway.

Yeah, once I get the new comm up I'll ask that Mod for permission to post a link. IMO the two comms don't conflickt because that one seems to be mostly for primary care-givers, and mine will be for them but also for non-primaries, medical/healing sciences people with advice (if I can get 'em), people receiving care, and just anyone interested in the topic.

I would definitely join. Funny, until you mentioned it, it didn't even occur to me to go looking for one, but it would be great to have a place to discuss these issues.

It's sounding like a lot of us need this...

I don't need it quite yet, but I know my parents know a lot about it (because of their parents) and we've been trying to help Andy's parents with these kinds of issues. Ack, I feel young.

I would definitely help spread the word - I can think of at least one person on my friends-list who has posted asking the Hard Questions and none of us have been much help.

Mare: I sent you a private message.
Also, you might want to look into Boston Commission on Affairs for the Elderly. If you were to follow up on my message, there are tons of resources here in town.
