As most of you know, underneath the brown dye my hair is mostly pure white (It's genetic, runs in the family). Recently [livejournal.com profile] beowabbit suggested it might look cool if I grew out one shock of white in the front, kind of like Bonnie Raitt. I could cover it with temporary dye while it was growing out, or for stage roles. I can sort of see it, but I wonder if it would age me. Curious what y'all people think:

My mom's hair did that naturally, and it was quite striking. I would imagine it'd depend on the person, though.

I vote for purple. But then again, I usually vote for purple.

Personally, it's not my thing. I've never thought it looked all that good—not bad, certainly, but not great. Of course, that's just my opinion, which shouldn't amount to a hill of beans. If your Wabbit thinks it might be cool, and you feel it might be fun to try, give it a go and see if you like it. Doesn't matter what some fuddyduddy across the Pond thinks anyway. Besides, I've only seen black/white contrasts; brown/white might work a lot better.

For a bunch of years, I bleached a white streak in my hair (on the side by my ear). The original intent was to make it a bright color, but I liked the white enough that I just kept it that way. Whenever I did something dumb, I'd blame it on my blonde streak.

It was also located such that I could tuck it behind my ear and make it largely invisible if I wanted to, but y'know, I started doing this in HS, so I'm sure I didn't care about that much, and the question of looking too old did not exist. :)

I love my gray streak, personally, but maybe that's because it is limited to one little streak. But it certainly doesn't seem to age me too much! I say give it a shot.

I'm not anti-white hair, or ageist, or nothin' -- I love my silver, and think it's sexy on a lot of women. It's just that the white streak reminds me of alte kakers with raccoon stripes. Go all-white if that's natural for you by all means, but the fake stripes, as opposed to natural greying/whitening, always look old-lady to me.

i have nothing against white hair -- in fact, it looks awesome on some people. but i suspect a white streak would look really odd on you (fwiw)

Since you asked, I think that it would look fabulous. I say go for it and if you don't like it you can always dye it to match.

Otherwise, you'll just be wondering...

I would say that you should do it. You're in a stable place in your life, you're not out looking for a job or trying to make a statement of any kind, I'd say you are in the perfect position to play as much as possible. I even saw stuff in Walgreens today in case you put in dye you didn't want. I have no idea if it would work to take out dye that's been in there a while, but you could try it. That way you could decide if you liked it all at once!

Age you?

I picked the second option, but I feel a need to respond to the third option.

Aging is beautiful and should be more lauded in our society than it is.

Over the years, I have asked three stylists (two of whom were pretty punk rock) to do as you described. They all said no. So now I'm just letting ALL the grays do their thang without intervention. I hope that I can live vicariously through you if you do it!

Actually, I didn't know that -- thought it was naturally red-brown.

kind of like Bonnie Raitt

or like Susan Sontag?

Ooh! Like Stacy London on What not To Wear!

I say go for it...you can always cover it if you don't like it. I always wanted hair like Emmylou Harris. That beautiful white.

I think that white hair in general can be extremely striking so I am totally a fan of trying a little and see how you like it.

I am also one who will never dye my hair and have the stripe of white/grey coming in all on it's very own :)

Maybe it's just my age, but I think women with grey/white hair are sexy, especially if it's long.
