There's a beautiful all-black squirrel living on or near our property. It's one of the young crop of squirrels from this year. Black squirrels are common in other parts of the continent, but this one is really distinctive from the usual gray-brown squirrels we have here. I wonder how it got here, or if it has a genetic quirk. It's quite lovely, in any case. I've seen other squirrels chasing it and trying to make The Sexeh Business, so I think she's female.

If so, then I hope she finds a buck squirrel whom she feels good enough about to consent to mutually satisfying congress, so she can perhaps make more pretty black squirrels. I think I like squirrels better when they don't all look exactly the same.

If I can't say something nice...

...I won't say anything at all -- You know my feelings about squirrels :)

I will relay the bad news that the gene for black fur is recessive, so unless she finds another black squirrel mate, the babies will be brown :(

i've actually seen a few of those around here lately...there was one near our street the other day, and i saw one at the CVS up broadway several months back (i mean, unless its the same squirrel and its just really well-traveled)...maybe they're making a comeback?

The first apartment that I lived in had an albino squirrel (all white with red eyes). We used to talk about what would happen if it mated with a black squirrel. Cow spots? Zebra stripes? Or perhaps a demon squirrel - all black with red eyes?*

(*Yes, I'm aware these theories are the opposite of science.)

I ran a business of making demon squirrels a few years back. They aren't actually all that hard to reproduce. You just have the regular squirrel nest for a few days in a ball of paper composed of Chick Tracts, House Un-American Activities Committee memos, and pages from the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice study. Oh, and you add some coffee beans. In a few days, you have a blazing-bright demon squirrel, ready to leap directly onto the face of anyone waving a God Hates Fags sign or blocking the entrance to a Planned Parenthood.

It was a real joy to work in that field. Alas, the economy has been hitting everyone hard, even the demon squirrel business. The sad irony is that this is when the world needs demon squirrels the most!

Orthogonal to science, rather!
