Of Pancakes and Persons

plumtreeblossomAfter the steering committee meeting yesterday, I got to spend part of the afternoon with BenJamin, who is staying at Lou's here on a brief stopover between Mexico and Missouri (odd routing, that). We shared tales of his Mexican adventures and my T@F Journey Part The Third. I didn't expect to see him, with my trip in two days and all, so it was a lovely surprise to sit and gab like the old days.
I went back over to Lou's that evening for a most bizzarre event -- their annual fundraiser Pancake Eating Contest to raise money for charity. Everybody attending put in $10, and score was kept on each participant's pancake scarfing. I ate 2 just to taste them, but with my slow metabolism I can't participate in competitive eating without paying a steep price on the scale, so after sampling the yummy cakes I assumed the role of Pancake Runner and was ferrying platter after hot platter of cakes from the kitchen to the dining area (3 chefs/hosts were churning out pancakes like an IHOP at brunch rush).
For those of you who know him, you probably won't be surprised that when the contest ended, Jamin was the runaway winner with 36 pancakes inside his belly. That is not a typo -- 36 pancakes. I wonder how he's feelng this morning. If you see him on this visit, poke him in the tummy, but veeeery gently.
