Cannibal Pies and Beach Time
Aug. 8th, 2010 09:52 amOn Friday,
beowabbit,
surrealestate and I saw Sweeney Todd by the MIT Gilbert & Sullivan Players. Several friends had meaty ensemble roles (*waves*), and they were awesome. It looked like greaty fun up there, though extremely physically demanding (all those stairs, lots of running to and fro). There were some truly spectacular voices up there, and our only wish was that they were amplified; the orchestra pretty thoroughly drowned them out at many points (If you go, sit as far to house left as you can. You don't want to miss these voices, but you might if you sit in house right). There was an epic concession stand WIN: hot meat pies! I smelled them toward the end of Act I, and sure enough, there they were. They were actually delicious Cornish pasties (pronounced PASS-tees) shipped all the way from a bakery in Michigan. These soylent treats were the perfect accompaniment to a great show.
In the morning,
beowabbit and I breakfasted at our favorite hole-in-the-wall in Quincy and headed to the T-accessible beach that's just off the JFK/Umass T-stop (I can't remember the beach's name). We were mystified as to why the beach was largely deserted on this absolutely perfect beach day. Turns out it was low tide. Tide at most of the beaches we've been to usually doesn't mean anything more than how far you need to walk to the water. But at this beach, low tide meant a wide band of slimy-textured mud between the sand and the water's edge. On my 2nd attempt to approach the water (wearing Wabbit's waterproof sandals) I discovered the source of the slime -- hundreds of thousands of small live sea snails, no doubt oozing their copious mucous onto the mud's surface, creating a sticky slick. Yeek. I had trouble operating the outdoor shower and got dirty looks while washing the sandals in a bathhouse hand sink. Next time we go, I'll remember to check the tide.
Once we gave up on the water, though, we had a lovely time lounging on the beach.
beowabbit caught some much-needed sleep, and I read and played with a portable microscope he bought me a while back (there is plenty to look at under a microscope at the beach, including your long-suffering partner's body hair). We had lemon ice, and I managed not to burn at all due to liberal use of sunscreen. I love when we get to go to the beach. Here's hoping we get more trips in before the summer ends.

Somewhat to my surprise, I didn’t burn either! I’m nice and brown, though.
I love you, my darling!
