Tomorrow morning, way too early, I'm off to Logan for the yearly family visit to Rochester. It's actually not even Rochester itself, but a far-flung suburb 20-minutes from Rochester called Pittsford. My suburbophobia kicks in hard when I'm there, the house in which my angst-ridden teens were spent. They'll have a pretty tree though, and at least this year I will be spared the brutal Chrismas Eve at my brother's quasi-wife's house in the bleakest of all bleak housing tracts in Webster, NY. I won't even go into that; I'm just glad it's not on the agenda. My mother adopted four little kittens earlier this year, and I'll much prefer their company. :-)

One difficult part of these holiday visits is that I will be without Internet access for 5 days, an eternity to me unless I decide to walk the two miles up the road to the strip mall where there's a Kinko's with Internet access -- $24/hour. The ironic thing is, I probably will do it. I have no other choice, since I can't access e-mail from my current cell phone. I can live without LJ but I must have my e-mail.

I had such a funny self-depricating post composed in my head about all the humorous mid-life crisis things I did this past year, but I'm at work and just not able to stay focused while splicing LJ with incoming work. More soon.

I hope the visit passes quickly.

The spooky thing is...one of N.'s best friends lives in Pittsford. We were there in July and I know exactly what you mean by suburbophobia. It gave me the creeps after about an hour.

But the folks are nice. Let me know if you need rescue and we can probably send them to fetch you for awhile. They have computers. And know where the Indian and Chinese restaurants are!

Thanks, B! It's hard being the only city mouse in a family of country mice. (also the only Liberal, techno-friendly, queer-friendly, artsy-fartsy, etc, etc, etc). I love them and they love me, but we're from different planets.

Every public library I have ever been to in every nook and cranny city, town, or village in the United States and Canada has had computers with free Internet access. One does not need to be a resident of that nook to use the computer. You might have to fill out a form but that's all. That's the glory of public libraries.
