Apr. 25th, 2004 02:33 pmFestival for The Earth Concert, 2004
The irreplicable sensation of a blanket on grass against the skin, sun growing warmer with each hour, that first day outdoors without a jacket after the longest winter in memory. Clouds, kites, balloons escaping into the stratosphere. Dogs wearing bandanas. Children with faces painted like flowers and animals. Ice cream. Music. These outdoor concerts are a bright jewel in the crown of summer to me.
Todd, Don and I spent the whole day there, and Erika joined us for a while. Going early is always worth the extra effort, I think. Great view and plenty of room to stretch out under the wide open sky.
Half way through the day there was a terrible accident – a large piece of scaffolding laden with speakers fell forward onto the crowd standing at the front, injuring many people. The emergency was compounded by hundreds of people pushing forward to gawk, which slowed the ambulances and rescue efforts. The people injured were taken to the hospital, and so far I hear no one was killed. Lots of healing wishes to them all.
The concert did continue afterward. Third Eye Blind were markedly shaken up by the accident, but they did their best to rally the crowd’s spirit. Miss Edie Brickell is a marvel of science – she looks and sounds exactly as she did 15 years ago, as though she’d been cryogenically frozen in the late 80’s and resurrected without one cell touched by the effects of time and wear. Los Lonely Boys are mad guitar acrobats and a new discovery for me. The singer from Third Eye Blind shared an anecdote about his long-ago teenage crush on Edie Brickell. She was the only person he ever sent a fan letter to, and she didn’t write back. Maybe he finally got a kiss from Mrs. Simon.

I went over to the apartment of a nice Indian lady and bought three gorgeous Punjabi dresses for just $10 each. One more reason why we love CraigsList. She also sold me some traditional bangle bracelets to go with the dresses. Now I just need an occasion to wear them...
