[livejournal.com profile] beowabbit and I caught the closing night performance of Big Broadcase 1954/Sleepy Hollow last night, in spite of my being under the weather and a little out of sorts because of it. We'd seen it on opening night, but there were still some surprises. Particular among them was a pre-recorded curtain speech before the Sleepy Hollow segment, featuring the voice-over talents of none other than our Man In Afghanistan, [livejournal.com profile] srakkt. That was a lovely surprise. Great performances all around, as always.

Tonight it's candy-giving to the kids, and I hope we get lots. Trick-or-treating was one of my favorite parts of childhood, and I hope kids today enjoy it just as much. :-)

I feel so glad that Camberville dodged the worst of the storm and is able to have trick-or-treating tonight! The thought of being a parent trying to explain to their five-year-old that Halloween is cancelled is right up there with "Oh no, Disneyworld burned down!" on the list of Conversations I'm Glad I'll Never Have With a Child.

Oh, me too! Growing up where I did, in the decade I did, trick-or-treating was epic! The sidewalks were just thronged with kids. We didn't walk, we ran, hitting as many houses as we possibly could. Parents strolled along behind, cigarettes glowing like red fireflies in the dark, toting thermoses of something called "It's grown-up cider, you wouldn't like it." Ah, the 70s.

Our passion for candy acquisition was limitless. I would have trick-or-treated in a downpour of hydrochloric acid. I would have trick-or-treated while on fire. I WAS on fire, dammit!

Missing a year would have been beyond devastating. To everyone's utter horror, one year a boy in my 3rd grade class got scheduled for his tonsilectomy hospital stay on Halloween. I seethed on his behalf, at the sadistic cruelty of adults. Interestingly though, it never even occurred to me to bring in some of my candy for him. No one thought to. I mean, we cared and all, but not enough to, you know, share. Funny how that worked back then. :-)
