I pass this information on for the benefit of [livejournal.com profile] ron_newman from [livejournal.com profile] r_ness, who is a frequent world traveler:

Somerville, Massachusetts is more densely populated than Hong Kong.

7,019.3 people per square kilometer for Somerville, 6,380 for the Hong Kong S.A.R.

*whole town does booty dance*

It doesn't really feel all that crowded, at least not in my west side 'hood. Often when I'm walking home from work I'm the only person walking on my street. There must be some mega apartment complexes or something that I don't know about.

I believe the reason for this is that Somerville has almost zero green space, so there are very few areas of no population. If you factored out those areas, Somerville wouldn't be nearly so high on the list.

I don't know much about Hong Kong, but Cambridge (which feels as dense as Somerville when you walk around it) has Danehy Park, Cambridge Cemetery, a small part of Mount Auburn Cemetery, and Fresh Pond Reservation which includes a golf course.

Exactly, that's my point.

I'm fortunate that I live right around the corner for the lovely park at Powderhouse. It's incredibly underused, for one of the only green spaces in Somerville. There's plenty of room that they could put a playground in there.

Yeah, it's not that there are zero parks, but like Powderhouse Park, they are very small compared to the vast stretches you see in Cambridge, Arlington, Boston, etc.
