It's highly unusual for me to contribute (intentionally) to a meme. But I've been seeing this one and gaining some welcome and often fascinating insight into people I know, and who I know a tiny bitter better for the meme. Nothing on here is necessarily "rare" in a global sense, and in fact there's nothing here that has never been done by anyone else. The rareness is meant in a different sense, in that the experience fell outside the streamline of daily living in a way that uniquely helped flavor my life. And so, coloring inside the length-limit lines as best I can (and I can't really), here is mine. Carpe diem.

TEN RARE THINGS

1) Flew to Japan to meet my online lover for the first time
2) Lay naked on the floor of Death Valley under the stars of a moonless night
3) Inched at midnight along a rain gutter 90 feet high with the son of Andre Debus (RIP Jeb)
4) Danced in a pouring thunderstorm to Trinidadian drums
5) Played a male prostitute/thespian in a play
6) Slept in Grand Central Station
7) Fed Romanian feral dogs from my pockets on a dark cobblestone sidestreet
8) Looked at the shards of my father’s skull and brains on the forest floor
9) Partied all night in a hotel room with The Ramones
10) Trampled grapes with my bare feet
10a) Gazed out the window of Anne Frank’s house
10b) Ate breakfast at a diner with Jim Carroll
10c) Tripped on mescaline with drag queens
10d) Swore I wouldn’t leave Scotland until I’d kissed a Scotsman (I'm home, aren't I?)
11) Nearly half of these are from the most recent five years

Yep, remember his Halloween costume this year? That was of course when I had to mention it, though the real Joey was drinking Rolling Rock instead of PBR.

No, everybody's experience set is different, and you've definitely done things that I haven't. I've read them in your LJ. Much depends on environment and the various energies you let into your life.

now i'm really confussed. i can' think of one single thing that comes close to as interesting as all those cool places you've been. i don't even have a passport. my journal is pretty boring, at least i think so.

Sure you have. You've experienced marriage, living out West, interacting with all sorts of people that I haven't. Marriage especially is a profound journey full of many sub-roads that you've traveled. Plus, you did it all at about half my age. Life is long. :-) And if you're open to new directions and possibilities, you'll be amazed at the adventures you'll find yourself having as the years go by.

thanks. though i find my life pretty boring in comparison, i guess it is, ... comforting ... to have someone to come home to.

i never really thought about it like that.
