Huzzah! My flight back to Boston landed at Logan at 4:00 PM today, just in the nick of time to beat this mighty snowstorm! The house is rattling in the wind and my roomie Chris is sick with the flu, but I made it back.

Rochester had a green Christmas, which doesn't bother me in the slightest, but is unusual. It was sunny bright all day. AS any of you who have been to Rochester know, there are only two places the sun don't shine, and Rochester is one of them. Yet it did.

This year's holiday with the family was much happier than in recent years. We enjoyed a notable lack of drama or tension -- something all of us remarked upon. It was also an extemely good holiday from a food perspective. Every night we made something utterly delicious for dinner: lasagne, turkey, homemade vegetable soup. I know that sounds mundane in the extreme, but those old comfort foods were better than any haute cuisine to me.

Our family is tiny. Just me, my brother Jim, his young daughter Emily, and Mom. There are far-flung relatives, but they are really little more than acquaintances and I barely know them. Being a miniature clan can be both harder and easier. Our shopping lists are short and embarassingly manageable compared to most. I make up for the lack of cousins/kin with my family of friends. So it's as quiet and low-key as a Christmas can be with a 7-year-old in the house. My Mom's four recently adopted kittens kept things constantly amusing. They make me want to start typing in < resist> babytalk. < /resist> Pwecious pwetty babies!

Young Emily is 7 years old and is 4'10" already. That's scary -- I have adult women friends who are that height. She curled up to sleep in my lap and it was like having a small-ish full grown woman sitting on me. Yet she's a little girl. She coaxed me into staying up last night to dance to her CDs. Yes folks...Justin Timberlake, Hillary Duff, NSync, Brittany... and yours truly. I love her so much. (and must help expand her musical horizons, stat)

Tomorrow is my really-o truly-o birthday (this time for real). A swell present would be for my company to call a snow day. :-)
