Last night I put a temporary (as in lasts-28-washes) dark coloring in my hair. It is basically the color you see in this icon, which is to say, dark reddish brown. The purpose of this was so that I don't have to listen to my family kvetch about my bottle-blond hair, which they loathe. So for a while at least, I am once again the brunette I was as a child.

I'm really liking it. It's remarkable how it changes the appearance of my skin, and takes away all that hormonally-caused ruddiness that I hate. It's fun looking down and seeing my curls in a different color. I wish I'd done this before the cabaret so I could have been a brunette Elphaba.

So [livejournal.com profile] beowabbit, you get to revel in the attentions of a dark vixen tomorrow night (me!).

I've been wondering when you might go brunette again, especially whenever I see that icon--I think it's a good color on you.

I also colored to a darker shade yesterday, which I guess I've done for the past few winters.

Brown was the original color I was born with. So it always works with my skin tone.

Sometime in the next year I would like to color my hair. I want a color that is natural, but makes me look as unrecognizable as possible from how I look now (came up in meditation that this might help me overcome a phobia. The mind works in strange ways.) I am thinking maybe red, though I have not figured out what shade yet. Never having dyed my own hair before, I guess this will be an adventure I miss the purple lady. Everything she touched turned to purple, including part of my hair:)

I hear you

I had been streaking my brown hair and loved the blond highlights that resulted from it, thinking it made me look not only younger but, well, healthier.
My husband does the actual coloring for me, bless his heart--but the last time he did it, I ended up with sort of blocks of blond rather than streaks so...I decided to put a dose of all brown on my hair and start over.
Much to my disappointment, more than one of my co-workers commented that they liked the all brown look. "It looks so natural," said one.
I miss my streaks. I miss the blond.

huh, ruddiness and hair color- boy, do I know about the ruddiness part from my own skin. How do you mean hormonally-caused?
And that looks like such a beautiful cinnamon color- hope to get to see it soon!

Hormone fluctuations can drive the body temperature up, causing the face, neck, and chest to flush. This in turn can break tiny capillaries in the skin, causing permanant reddening. It can happen to both men and women. My skin used to be lily white, except for some freckles. Now it's so pink that you can hardly even see the freckles anymore (which is a shame because I liked them). This darker hair does help minimize the red appearance, though.
