A while back, LJ announced a non-fiction contest for LJ users. They've picked a grand prize winner, to be announced next week, but they're also sponsoring a Community Choice contest with the 10 runners-up. I just finished reading all ten, and I highly recommend you read them too and vote for your favorite: LJ Non-Fiction Contest. There's some outstanding reading over there.

I completely regret not writing something and entering, but I forgot all about it in the busy throes of the past few weeks. Maybe they'll have more contests, since this one yielded such great work.

I would classify almost all of these as memoir. Which, while it does fall under the catagorical umbrella of "non-fiction" (presuming authorial honesty), is a beast of its own in many ways. Considering though that LJ us used mostly by personal bloggers and diarists, memoir is probably the lion's share of what they received.

I wouldn't have thought to send memoir, though. When they said Non-Fiction Contest, to my mind that meant journalistic articles, which I have less experience in writing. I toyed with the idea of writing about community theatre, (thus bringing Theatre@First international fame if I won ;-)) but then things got all busy and I forgot all about the contest.

I'm so glad they chose writing by adults. Before I clicked the list of finalists, I was afraid it would be "lolz mah friendz n me r teh shitt" or whatever. Very glad there are so many mature, talented writers on LJ.
