plumtreeblossom: (eat me)

The pretty courtyard where I take my breaks at work is infested with those tiny red spiders that bite. You know, the ones that are so small you can barely see them, but their bites leave coin-sized welts that itch relentlessly for days. There I was, sitting on the steps I'd been sitting on for 5 minutes, when I looked closely at the steps and saw I was sitting in a fine colony of them.

I jumped up fast and brushed off, but that 5 minutes was probably time enough for one to climb up my pant leg or under my blouse. I'm back upstairs, but now every possible sensation on my skin makes me squiggle in my seat and worry whether it was an itch or just my clothing brushing on me. I hate those little red bastards. I hope they have an infintesimally tinier creature that plagues them on their bodies.

Don't worry, I'll change every stitch of clothing and take a shower before coming to rehearsal tonight.

I hope you escape unscathed!

Oh, I HATE that feeling! I used to work in a state mental hospital, back in the early 80's, and they found lice on a patient on the ward I was working that day*. God, my skin crawled for days afterwards.

*I was a floater who was assigned to whichever ward was short-staffed that day, so it wasn't due to any mismanagement on my part that the patient had lice.

Got scabies?

That was like when I was taking pathology in massage school, particularly going over the many MANY skin disorders. Not a day went by when somebody wasn't convinced they had something.

When I was in elementary school, we kids were on a perpetual witch hunt for scabies carriers. We would inspect each other's hands and pronounce every mark and freckle to be scabies. Of course nobody really had it, but that didn't stop us.

Don't worry, I know you wouldn't let anyone in your care get away with lice farming! :-)

Ick! I hope they didn't manage to get you at all or at least not too bad.

And at least they aren't ridiculously poisonous either. Both my dad and my grandmother (in different states) were bitten by highly poisonous spiders. My dad couldn't sit down for a week! (Both are okay thanks to antibiotics!)

Have I mentioned I *HATE* spiders?

Yikes, glad they were okay. I've never gotten a poisonous bite, that I know of (and I imagine I would probably know! :-))

They must be out in full force! There's someone at work who's office is infested with these critters.

Oh no! I hope they don't spread to the whole office!

They'll spread beyond the office and take over the city!!

If anyone asks I welcome our new tiny red spider overlords...

So far it appears I got away without any bites. (thank you, pants!) I'll have to stay out of the courtyard until they're dealt with. I did mention it to building management, though!
