I think I'm drawn to men who enjoy unorthodox combinations of flavors. I was telling [livejournal.com profile] beowabbit about a man I once loved who liked to make garlic hummus with blueberries mixed in. That's a very alien idea to my palate, but [livejournal.com profile] beowabbit thought the dish sounded totally delicious.

Or, maybe those men are drawn to me. I am, after all, a highly unorthodox combination of weird things. :-)

So I'll pose the question to you, my hungry readers:

You're "a highly unorthodox combination of weird things"? I knew I liked you! :-)

So tell me which weird things you're a combination of.

Well, being a half-Jew brings together all sorts of contrasting things in one person. Both my Jewish side and my goy side are evident in many ways, depending on the context. I used to hate that I didn't fit completely on one side or the other. Now I like being mixed.

I'm a liberal sprung from a moderately-conservative family. While the vast majority of my opinions are lefty, I do have a few that could arguably be called slightly conservative, such as my opinion that more effort should be put into the prevention of welfare abuse. There are a small handful of Republicans who I like and respect, like Colin Powell and Arlen Specter. So whole I'm certainly not half-and-half on my socio-political stances, I'm not 100% liberal on a few subjects.

I guess those are both rather lame testimony to the "I'm weird" arguement, since there are a bajillion half-Jews and non-extreme liberals out there, but I'm at work and couldn't think of anything else!

I want a "...sounds intriguing and could be yummy" option. Cranberries might be better. Ditto for chocolate and steak, which I actually have tried together and can be very good.

As with most superficially-implausible relationships, the beauty is that it emphasizes aspects of the individual contributors that would otherwise get lost.

I meant to put in an "I'd try it" option, but I forgot and now I can't change it or LJ will make the poll break. But I'll count your vote as ""...sounds intriguing and could be yummy." :-)

I totally regret forgetting to put in a "I'd try it" option. I'll count you as another who would have chosen that!

You'll have to include me, too, then. I would definitely try it, as I've been known to enjoy combinations that others find nauseating. But blueberries and garlic just don't sound like they'd go together. I agree with Dave that cranberries might go better. Also apples, pineapples, or mangoes, but not blueberries. I'm willing to be proved wrong, though.

Garlic hummus and blueberries sounds okay, but not awesome--at least partly because although I'll eat blueberries I'm not partial to them--prefer other berries. And garlic hummus with any other berry is also "eh" not because it sounds like an awful combination but because I think the garlic and hummusiness would overwhelm the berry-ness.

Adding chili pepper and kiwi, for some reason, actually improves the idea though.

Maybe because the kiwi is a stronger fruit flavor, therefore better balancing out the Fruit Team and the Pungent Spices Team.

My favorite way to eat hummus is with salsa, so the idea of a tart fruit doesn't seem that weird, even with chili. One of my favorite guacamole recipes involves chunks of pear, quartered grapes, and pomegranite seeds, so blueberries would fit right in. :)

You're one of the foodie people who I suspected would approve of the bluberry - garlic hummus interface. :-)

I absolutely cannot stand mixed-together foods. I need everything to be separate. I mean, if I'm in a restaurant, I'll do my best - but I had a friend make a dinner I could hardly eat because everything (fish, veggies, risotto) was all mixed together.

Needless to say, there's no way I could ever try that!

Hmmmmm. . . This is a complicated question. Since, as has been mentioned (and lamented), there is no, "I'd try it option," I'll just voice that opinion here.

To be honest, it sounds intriguing. I'm pretty good at putting together dishes and combinations based on the fact that I have a pretty good memory for how things taste. Blueberries and garlic hummus would be an interesting combo, but I'm trying to decide if the blueberries need to be on the tart or the sweet side, if they need to be mushed in or whole, and based on that information, whether to go with sweeter, elephant garlic, or go for something a little sharper. . .
