District Tartans

I've had reason to think about kilts today, not the least of which being that
beowabbit's sexah Utilikilt finally arrived today! Combining that with the swooningly hot Scottish brogues of the office renovation contractors I've been working with this week, I somehow ended up wandering onto a really neat website about district tartans.
District tartans represent a place or region, rather than a family clan. Their use is as old or older than that of clan tartan, and they're enjoying a revival. Hundreds of places all over the world have adopted official tartans, and they're for anyone with ties to that place, no need to have any clan or even any Scottish ancestry. The US and Canada each have dozens of local tartans, as well as national ones.
