I'm not at all sure I have the self-restraint to wait the several days until my copy of David Sedaris' newly released When You Are Engulfed In Flames arrives from Amazon. Lunch hour approaches, and the MIT Coop is two blocks away. Like the author himself, I lack the fortitude and general adultness to wait for something I've already purchased, and will probably instead part with a $20 bill in the name of child-like greed and instant gratification.

If this happens, the spare copy will be offered to [livejournal.com profile] beowabbit, though I don't think he's very familiar with Sedaris' body of work, and I'm unsure whether I can sell him on an author who has made a career out of exposing the hilarious side of being his own worst enemy. As for me, I eat up his every written word like sugar-coated cereal.

Hmm..I'm not sure if you should tell him "You write like Frosted Flakes!!" or not. ;)

Actually, before I read your second paragraph I was going to reply and tell you I’d gladly buy your spare copy if you succumb to temptation. (Which I still would, of course.)

I’ve never read any Sedaris, but I know him through This American Life. I’d love to read some of him.

It's all yours, sweetielove! I'll give it to you on Friday.

David Sedaris has been called "the gay Mark Twain," among other things. His memoirs and essays are side-splittingly funny, often at his own expense. We get frequent glimpses of life growing up gay in a Greek-American family (much of it in Raleigh-Durham, in fact), being an expat, being an aspiring actor, being everything from house cleaner to department store elf. As far as I know I own every book he's ever written. I hope you'll enjoy the read. :-)

I've never read any of David Sedaris' books and he comes highly recommended. I must fix that! :-)

To change the topic somewhat, I see you work really close to where I work. Would you like to come with me to the thursday farmers' market sometime? (Have you been to it yet?) I'll probably go tomorrow, unless work is insanely busy. (Which it might be.)

It just started last year. I really hope my favorite organic farmers are back this year! (They weren't there two weeks ago when I stopped by.)

I also first knew of him through This American Life, & that’s a good thing, because now when I read his work I can hear it in his voice.

David, his little sister Amy Sedaris, and Sarah Vowell [Assassination Vacation] can always be counted on to get my chin up off the floor.

Oooh! Glad I checked back on [livejournal.com profile] plumtreeblossom’s old entries and saw your comment! After she and I read the book, we can all talk about it. :-)

Hugs and love to you!

I get to listen to lots of NPR when I'm riding with Jay in the car. When we go on long trips, my job is to look up the local NPR stations as we move through the different areas. :-)
