I tasted deep-fried pickles last night. Redbones was offering them when we went after rehearsal; something new from down south, apparently. There was something vaguely naughty about the magnified sourness of a hot pickle juxtaposed with fried batter coating. The parameters governing what should and shouldn't be deep-fried seems to have blurred. The pickles and an icy mojito made for a broadening snack.

I loved to order fried pickles in New Orleans but I hadn't seen them up here until very recently. Firefly's in Framingham seems to have been Patient Zero, and now Redbones and a few other places have added them. They do make terrific bar food; salty, sweet, and the vinegar in the pickles does a great job of cutting through the deep fat. As Mare described it, it's almost kinky. :)

The parameters have been blurred by state fairs all across country. Deep fried candy bars, deep fried potato chips, deep fried bull testicles...

It is a life-long goal of mine to deep fry all that can be deepfried. I'm currently trying to solve the problem of deep frying slivers of butter...

"Deep friend?" When we're reduced to battering and immersing our near and dear in bubbling oil, clearly the trend has gone too far. ;)

Interestingly (or not so), the real spelling of my family name is "Fried," though pronounced with the long eee. My father changed our spelling for a number of reasons, but one of them was the constant mispronunciation. It was Ohio, after all.
